ELKH President Balázs Gulyás opens the CERME13 Conference in Budapest

ELKH President Balázs Gulyás delivered the opening address at the 13th Congress of the European Society for Research in Mathematics Education (CERME13) on 10 July 2023 at Eötvös Loránd University’s Faculty of Science Campus in Budapest. The conference, which attracted some 1,000 mathematician researchers from around the world, was co-organized by the ELKH Alfréd Rényi Institute of Mathematics and Eötvös Loránd University (ELTE), the largest university and teacher-training institution in Hungary.

In his speech, President Gulyás highlighted Hungary's contributions to the field of mathematics, including world-renowned mathematicians like Professors László Lovász and Endre Szemerédi and also emphasized Hungary's leadership in research in mathematics education. As the President of ELKH, soon to be renamed the Hungarian Research Network, he pledged his unwavering support to foster the success and growth of Hungarian mathematician researchers.

He elaborated on the importance of a multidisciplinary approach in research on mathematics education, highlighting the integration of fields such as psychology and neurobiology. Drawing on his expertise as a medical doctor, neurobiologist, and scientist, as well as his personal interest in mathematics, he shared insights into investigating the neuroscientific foundations of learning mathematics, discussed how these skills can be improved, and explored the potential consequences of such improvement.
