The Veterinary Medical Research Institute (VMRI) is the sole research facility in Hungary with a primary focus on veterinary science and is a cornerstone of molecular microbiological investigations in the field. Its fundamental purpose is basic research intended to gain greater insight into pathogens (viruses, bacteria, parasites) with particular relevance to veterinary medicine. Another principal task is to prepare for the practical implementation of the results, as well as to develop effective diagnostic methods, vaccines and defensive strategies against various diseases. Researchers at the institute also play a significant role in higher education in the field of veterinary and life sciences, principally in postgraduate training, as well as in vocational training of veterinarians.
