The Veterinary Medical Research Institute (ÁTKI) is the sole research facility in Hungary with primary dedication to veterinary science, and is a cornerstone of molecular microbiology research in the field. Its fundamental purpose is conducting basic research with the aim to providing greater insight into pathogens (viruses, bacteria, parasites) with particular relevance to veterinary medicine.
Another primary function is to prepare for the practical implementation of results and to develop innovative and effective diagnostic methods, vaccines and defensive strategies against various diseases. Researchers play a significant role in higher education in the field of veterinary and life sciences, principally in postgraduate (PhD) training, as well as in vocational training of veterinarians.
