The Institute was founded in 1950 and named after its first director, Alfréd Rényi, who led the Institute for 20 years until his death in 1970. In 2001, the HUN-REN Rényi Institute was awarded the title of EU Centre of Excellence. Its core activities extend to carrying out planned research in various fields of mathematics and its applications, focusing on theoretical studies of importance to the internal development of mathematics and the effective application of mathematics in other sciences and social practice. The Institute’s tasks include basic research into mathematical structures, mathematical analysis and its applications, basic and applied research into stochastics, discrete mathematics, and bioinformatics. The operation and development of the National Mathematical Library also falls under the remit of the Institute.
