New Governing Board to lead the Eötvös Loránd Research Network

Effective 15 July 2023, a new Governing Board assumes leadership of the Eötvös Loránd Research Network – from 1 September 2023 renamed the Hungarian Research Network, HUN-REN – based on the joint recommendation by János Csák, Minister of Culture and Innovation and Tamás Freund, President of the Hungarian Academy of Sciences, with the consent of ELKH President Balázs Gulyás. The mandates of the previous 13-member board members end on July 14, the new Governing Board will continue its work with 9 members whose appointment covers a period of 6 years.

The main task of the renewed board is to increase the measurable performance of the Hungarian research network and strengthen its position in the international scientific arena. The leader is ELKH President Balázs Gulyás, who has been leading the research network since 1 May 2023. Balázs Gulyás has worked and conducted research abroad for over 41 years – including at the Karolinska Institute in Sweden and later at the Nanyang Technological University in Singapore – thus demonstrating remarkable achievements both as a scientist and science organizer.

The members of the new Governing Board are:
  1. Prof. Dr. Balázs Gulyás, President of the Governing Board and of ELKH – physician, neurobiologist, external member of the Hungarian Academy of Sciences
  2. Prof. Dr. Veronika Ádám – Széchenyi Prize-winning physician, biochemist, university professor, full member of the Hungarian Academy of Sciences
  3. Prof. Dr. Enikő Bollobás – literary historian, corresponding member of the Hungarian Academy of Sciences, a co-founder of the Department of American Studies at Eötvös Loránd University
  4. Dr. Hassan Charaf – Dean, Head of Department and professor at the Department of Automation and Applied Informatics at the Budapest University of Technology and Economics
  5. Prof. Dr. László Hunyady – Széchenyi Prize-winning university professor, full member of the Hungarian Academy of Sciences, Director of the Institute of Enzymology of the ELKH Research Centre for Natural Sciences
  6. Roland Jakab – Managing Director of Ericsson Hungary, President of the Hungarian European Business Council
  7. Prof. Dr. Melinda Beatrix Kovács – Széchenyi Prize-winning veterinarian, university professor, full member of the Hungarian Academy of Sciences, Director of the Institute of Physiology and Nutrition at the Hungarian University of Agriculture and Life Sciences
  8. Prof. Dr. Gábor Szabó – physicist, university professor, full member of the Hungarian Academy of Sciences, Managing Director of the ELI-ALPS Laser Research Institute
  9. Prof. Dr. Zoltán Oszkár Szántó – professor at Corvinus University of Budapest, leader of the Corvinus Institute for Advanced Studies (CIAS), an international university-based hub for research excellence
