The Balaton Limnological Research Institute (BLKI), based in Tihany, is the largest biological research institute in the country. Its main tasks include the environmental research of freshwaters, the exploration of the wildlife of Lake Balaton and its catchment area, as well as the study of the lake’s spatial and temporal changes, life processes and material peculiarities, and the exploration of the environmental and anthropogenic factors affecting them. The institute also conducts basic and applied research related to existing international conventions on the protection of aquatic habitats, biodiversity and water quality, in particular the professional background for the implementation of the European Union Water Framework Directive and the development of ecological status assessment systems. Through its research results, the institute largely works to promote the protection of freshwater and wetland habitats and the preservation of their wildlife, thereby helping to support the realization of sustainable development in the Carpathian Basin.
